Mock-Up - Console Modifications (August 11, 2012)

Today I modified the console in order to fit on the new tranny tunnel.  I also made the mounting brackets for it.

This is the unmodified console.

First cut - note that the new tranny tunnel doesn't have all the funny bumps the original did, so the cut is pretty much straight.

Test fit

Using a contour gauge to copy the shape of the tunnel.

Transferring the contour to the inner supports of the console.  These are the 2 brackets that are the inner supports for the console.  These came with the console.  They had to be cut down to match the shape of the new tunnel.

Trimming the supports

These are the supports installed.

Next I fabricated mounting tabs for the front of the console.

These are the finished tabs, ready to be welded in place.

These are the front mounting tabs welded in place.

I used the same plywood buck that I formed the rear of the tunnel on to shape the rear mounting bracket.

I plug welded the bracket in place.

Here's the bracket welded in.

I added a piece across the top of the bracket to keep everything lined up.

Final test fit.  When we install this permanently, we will be using black pan head bolts.

Here's a detail of the front mounting tabs.

Here you can see the rear mounting bracket.

Here's the complete console bolted in place.
